Abstract
698,498. Variable-speed gearing. MINER, C. H. Nov. 11, 1950, No. 27597/50. Class 80 (ii). In an expanding V-belt pulley, the axial position of the movable flange 12, splined on the shaft 10, relative to the,flange 11, fixed to the shaft, is governed by balls 28 contained in L-; shaped passages 26, 27 in the member 12, the centrifugal force of the balls in the substantially-radial part 26 of the passages reacting through the remaining balls against pins 29 attached to a disc 30 fixed to the shaft, the centrifugal force of the balls in the part 27 having no effect on the pins 29 so that the effective mass of the balls decreases as the speed increases. Flange 12 is urged away from flange 11 by a spring 20 abutting against a washer 19 adjustable along the shaft, the adjustment being effected by a shaft 21 slidable within shaft 10 under the control of.a lever 25 and having a cross-pin 22 secured thereto and projecting through slots 23 in shaft 10 to engage the washer 19. A ball bearing 16 is mounted on the shaft 10 between the flanges 11, 12 on which the belt 17 may ride at idling speed.
