Abstract

694,650. Variable-speed friction gear. HODGKINS, H. W. HASTINGS-. Oct. 15, 1951 [July 24, 1950], No. 18477/50. Class 80 (ii). A continuously-variable gear, Fig. 1, comprises planetary balls 12, mounted on trunnions 16 in a driving casing 10, engaging a frustroconical disc 14 on an output shaft 22 and a similar disc 15 which is clutchable at 25 to a stationary frame 20. The velocity ratio is varied from a positive to a negative value, through zero, by inclining the trunnions 16 to the shaft 22, by means of bell cranks 17, a sleeve 18 and linkwork 19. An idle outer race 26 maintains the balls 12 against the discs 14, 15. A further gear, Fig. 2, comprises planetary balls 12 engaging a driving disc 14 with a conical surface, a driven disc 15 with a spherical surface and a split outer race 26a, 26b carried by a flywheel 11 and urged together by adjustable springs 27. Springs 35, 36 urge the discs 14, 15 together. It is stated that flywheel inertia provides the reaction torque until at a certain speed the balls 12, moving outwardly under centrifugal force, allow the spring 36 to move an annular gear 33 on the driven shaft 22 into mesh with stationary idle gears 32, which mesh a pinion 34 on the flywheel 11, thereby giving a fixed ratio reduction.
