Abstract

539,892. Variable-speed friction gearing. BUELER, A. March 18, 1940, No. 5035. [Class 80 (ii)] In variable-speed friction gearing in which rollers 43, tapered from the centre outwards and having concave surfaces, are mounted between convexly curved inner ways 40, 41 and outer ways 45, 46, which are axially movable to vary the points of contact and, consequently, the speed ratio, the inner ways rotate with one shaft of the gearing and the outer ways with the other shaft. The inner ways are splined on the driving- shaft 48 and can be urged towards each other by liquid supplied through a conduit 60 to spaces 56 formed between the ends of the ways and discs 55 fixed on the shaft 48. The rollers 43 are journalled in the fixed casing 50 of the gearing, and are mounted at one end in eccentric race-rings to permit them to move outwards under the pressure of the ways 40, 41. The outer ways 45, 46 are connected by springs 63 to a ring 64, which is connected with a driving- member 65 mounted on the driven shaft 66. When the rollers 43 are moved outwards by the pressure of the inner ways 40, 41, the outer ways 45, 46 move apart against the pull of the springs 63. The outer ways may be adjusted axially, in, order to vary the velocity ratio instead of the inner ways.
