Abstract

971,145. Variable-speed friction gear. K. MAICHEN. April 30, 1963 [April 30, 1962; Nov. 29, 1962], No. 16967/63. Heading F2D. A continuously variable friction gear cornprises conical members on coaxial or parallel driving and driven shafts with their conical surfaces facing away from one another and engaged by a friction ring adjustable to vary the gear ratio. As shown in Fig. 1 conical members 2, 3 connected to a driving shaft 1 and an output pinion 23 are engaged by a friction control ring 16, whose inclination is adjustable by an hydraulic piston 19, 20 integral with a stirrup member carrying two sets of rollers 17 engaging opposite sides of the ring. Spring washers 11 are mounted between the members 2, 3 and an additional fluid cushion 10 may also be provided. Nozzles 22 supply cooling fluid to the contact areas between the members 2, 3 and the control ring 16. In the embodiment according to Figs. 9, 10 shafts 40, 43 are connected by pinions 39, 42 meshing with the pinions 38, 41 of three lay gear units, each consisting of double cone members 2, 3 engaged by a pair of friction control rings 16. Fig. 12 shows a similar form of variable-speed unit combined with a spur pinion reversing gear 47, 48, 49, 52, 53 operated by a dog-clutch 51.
