Abstract

868,171. Variable-speed gear. MAICHEN, K. May 28, 1959 [May 30, 1958], No. 18200/59. Class 80 (2). The infinitely variable friction gearing shown in Fig. 1 comprises cones 12 splined on radial pins 10 journalled in a driving cage 8, the cones being urged outwardly by centrifugal force into frictional engagement with a non-rotatable axially-adjustable member 26. Bevel gears 23 on the pins 10 mesh bevel gears 24, 25 on shafts selectively clutchable to an output shaft 13 to give forward and reverse. Member 26 is adjusted axially to vary the gear ratio by oil supplied to a chamber A by an input driven pump 30 under the control of a valve 37. The pins 10 are mounted in the cage by means of eccentric bushes 11 which enable the pins to be accurately aligned. In the gearing of Fig. 2, cones 52 are splined to radial arms 50 mounted in a cage 48 geared to an input shaft 47 and are urged centrifugally outwardly into frictional engagement with an axially adjustable member 66 splined to an output shaft 53. Bevel gears 63 on the pins 50 mesh bevel gears 64, 65 on shafts 55, 56 selectively stationed by pins 57, 58 to give forward and reverse. Driven member 66 is adjusted by a nut 59 acting through thrust pins 45 and a bearing 60.
