Abstract
705,443. Expanding pulley gearing. JOHANSEN, F. Nov. 6, 1951 [Nov. 6, 1950], No. 25906/51. Class 80 (2) A continuously variable velocity ratio gear, of the kind comprising a pair of disc-shaped bodies 1, 2 which are rotatable together about a common axis on which they are relatively longitudinally adjustable, and at least one of the opposing surfaces 9 of which is of conical or convex cross-section, is characterized in that for power transmission purposes a rigid or stiff ring 5, made of plastic material, is provided in frictional engagement with the opposing surfaces. The plastic material has a higher coefficient of friction than metal and may be, e.g., that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Bakelite " ; the bodies 1, 2 are made from a high-grade steel or the like. The outer circumference of the ring 5 is provided with V-grooves 6 which are engaged by a V-belt, or a plane belt, chain &c. The bodies 1, 2 may be urged towards each other by springs, or by exteriorly controlled pneumatic, hydraulic or electromagnetic devices, and the belt, chain, &c. can be tensioned by an idle roller on a weighted rocker arm pressing against it.
