Abstract
694,009. Expanding-pulley gearing. AKTIEBOLAGET WESTERASMASKINER. July 10, 1951 [July 11, 1950], No. 16361/51. Class 80 (ii). A variable speed gear, of the kind comprising driving and driven pulleys 2, 5 connected by V-belts 3, 6 to a pulley, on an intermediate shaft 7, formed by three discs the centre one of which is displaceable between the outer two under the tension of the belts, is characterised in that the intermediate pulley is connected to one end of an arm 16 which crosses the line of centres c of the driving and driven pulleys at a point distant a from that line, the arm is pivoted at its other end to a fixed point 17 and is adjustable in length, and a toggle mechanism 14, 15 is provided for adjusting the position of the intermediate pulley. The sum of the distances a, b is about equal to the centre distance of the pulleys 2, 5. A link 22 connects the toggle links 14, 15 to a lever 23 which may be locked in various positions on a quadrant 24 corresponding to various velocity ratios of the gear. The arm 16 terminates in a threaded portion 25 which is adjustably held, by nuts 19, 27, on a member 26 which is pivoted at 17 to a stationary member 18. The effective length of the arm 16 may thereby be adjusted to vary the initial belt tension.
