Abstract

749,252. Variable-speed gearing. FENNER & CO. (HOLDINGS), Ltd., J. H., [formerly FENNER & CO., Ltd:, J. H.]. April 23,1954 [Jan. 26, 1953], No. 2223/53. Class 80(2) In variable-speed V-belt gearing wherein speed variations are effected by adjusting the distance between the axes of the pulleys or by moving a jockey pulley, one of the pulleys has conical flanges 1, 2 urged together both by a spring 24 and by torqueresponsive means, the rate of the 'spring being so related to the action of the torqueresponsive means that, under maximum power conditions, the total force urging the flanges together is substantially constant throughout the range of effective diameters of the pulley, so that the tensions in the tight and slack runs of the belt remain constant. As shown in Fig. 1, the flanges 1, 2 are slidably keyed together at 10 and are loose on a sleeve 3 fixed to the driving or driven shaft 4, and helically-grooved rings 21, 22 secured to the flanges 1, 2 engage with helical ribs 16 in a housing 14 secured to the sleeve 3. Alternatively, flange 1 may be axially fixed, ring 21 being then omitted. As shown in Fig. 5, the torque-responsive means comprise pairs of toggle links 29, 30 which straighten in response to increased torque, the mid-points of the toggles being carried by a ring 28 secured to the housing 14. A multiple-pulley arrangement is also described (Fig. 3, not shown).
