Abstract
571,602. Variable speed gearing. SHAW, L. E. Aug. 9, 1943, No. 12853. [Class 80 (ii)] In variable-speed gearing embodying expanding belt-pulleys and a countershaft, the, distance between the countershaft and the axes of the driving and driven shafts is varied automatically with the change in speed ratio. As shown, pulleys 6, 14 on coaxial driving and driven shafts 1, 4 are connected by belts 34, 35 to pulleys 36, 37 on a countershaft 31. The latter is carried by a member 44 pivoted to a bar 50 and has an adjusting screw 52. The bar 50 can slide vertically and has at its lower end a cam 54 engaging a roller 55 on a yoke 22 pivoted at 23 in the casing 3. The yoke 22 carries rollers 21 lying between thrust bearings 18, 19 carrying the movable sheaves 9, 16 of the pulleys 6, 14. Upon angular movement of the yoke 22 by a hand lever 25 movement is given to either sheave 9 or 16 whereupon the movable sheaves of the other three pulleys move to correspond to change the gear ratio. At the same time the roller 55 acts on the cam 54 to slide the bar 50 and maintain constant the belt tensions. An indicator 63 on an arm 64 fixed to the yoke 22 moves over a scale 61 to indicate the speed ratio.
