593,178. Belt and toothed gearing. WEARN'S PATENTS, Ltd. June 12, 1945, No. 14890. Convention date, July 12, 1944. [Class 80(i)] Combined belt and toothed reduction gearing comprises a pinion 2 on a driving shaft 1, such as the shaft of an electric motor, which engages a gear 4, 4 carried by a frame 3, 3 rotatably supported on the pinion 2 or driving shaft 1. The gear 4, 4 is formed with a central groove with opposed conical surfaces 8, 9 to receive a V-type belt 10 for driving a pulley on a driven shaft (not shown), the belt tension being maintained by the swinging of the frame 3, 3 about the shaft 1. The gear 4, 4 may be formed in two halves which are adjustable to vary the effective diameter of the pulley 8, 9 or may be formed of several sections to form two or more pulleys. In Fig. 3 the gear 4, 4 is supported in a frame 3, 3 by means of rollers 17 engaging peripheral flanges 19 on the gear.
