Abstract

523,348. Belt gearing. ATKINS, H. F. Dec. 5, 1938, No. 33930/37. [Class 80 (i)] Relates to means for driving a spindle of the kind in which an endless belt passes around three pulleys, one arranged on the spindle to be driven, another on an idle pulley and the other upon a driving pulley, the spindle pulley being intermediate the other two and the pulls upon it opposed, all three shafts being parallel and co-planar. According to the invention, the idle pulley 11 is larger in diameter than the spindle pulley 2 and the driving pulley 7 is larger in diameter and at a greater distance from the spindle pulley than the idle pulley whereby the area of contact of the belt portions 16, 17 and 19, 20 are substantially equal and result in a substantially pure torque. A single endless belt engages all three pulleys and commencing at 15, in a groove 8 of the pulley 7, stretch 16 goes to groove 3 of pulley 2, stretch 17 to groove 9 of pulley 7, stretch 18 to groove 12 in idle pulley 11, stretch 19 to groove 4 in pulley 2, stretch 20 to groove 13 in pulley 11, stretch 21 to groove 8 in pulley 7 and then back to starting point 15. Preferably the idle pulley shaft 10 is slightly adjustable for tensioning purposes.
