Abstract
588,845. Toothed gearing. MURPHY RADIO, Ltd., FISHER, L., and WOOD, W. D. Nov. 14, 1944, No. 22461. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XL] Means for taking up the backlash in toothed gearing connecting two spindles of, for example, a condenser drive of radio apparatus, comprises pulleys 5, 6 attached to the driving and driven spindles a, b which are connected by gearing 1, 2, 3, 4, and a cord 7 secured to and passing around these pulleys and another spring-loaded jockey pulley 8. The ratio of the diameters of the pulleys 5,6 is made the same as that of the gear train so that as the cord unwinds from one pulley it winds up on the other and the tension on the cord is arranged to be greater than the torque to be transmitted so that the backlash in the gearing is always in the same direction. In a modified arrangement the pulleys on the spindles a and b are the same size and two cords secured thereto pass over, and are secured to, two jockey pulleys of different sizes on a common axis which are angularly tensioned by a helical spring.
