Abstract
298,450. Kilcullen, P. J. April 11, 1928. Epicyclic gearing.-Epicyclic toothed gearing employs as a unit a casing 15 which has a gearwheel 16 secured exteriorly thereto and contains interengaging planet-wheels 21, 22 gearing respectively with a sun-wheel 14 secured to a shaft 13 and with a second sun-wheel 18 secured to a sleeve 17 on the shaft, the shaft and sleeve projecting from the casing. Two apparatus embodying the unit are described, one a reduction gear and the other effecting a one-to-one drive in which shock is reduced in starting and during running. In the reducing-gear, Fig. 1, a driving- shaft 26 carries gear-wheels 26, 28 of different diameters gearing respectively with a wheel 25 secured on the sleeve 17 and with the wheel 16, the shaft 13 constituting the driven element. In the shock absorbing drive, Fig. 5, the driven shaft 35 carries a wheel 40 engaging the wheel 16, the shaft 13 is connected to the prime mover, and a gear wheel 34 secured to the sleeve 17 is geared by wheels 39, 42, secured together and loose on the shaft 35, to a wheel 43 secured to a drum 44 connected by a spring 45 to a sleeve 32 anchored in the framing.
