Abstract
338,777. Laille, R. J. Dec. 22, 1928, [Convention date]. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises planet-gears c carried by a frame b upon a driving- shaft a and meshing with a sun gear e fast on a driven shaft d. The speed at which the planets c turn on their axes is varied by varying the amplitude of reciprocation of racks g which are carried by the frame b and mesh with pinions # connected by ratchets to the planets c. The racks g have ball ends seated in abutment swash-rings h which, turn loosely in non-rotary plates j on trunnions k in a fixed drum i. The speed of shaft d is thus varied by angular displacement of plates j. In a modification, the racks are replaced by helically-grooved rods passing axially through the planet gears.
