Abstract
445,314. Differential gearing. MANNING, MAXWELL, & MOORE, Inc., 405, Lexington Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 31, 1934, No. 37400. Convention date, Jan. 3. [Class 80 (ii)] A differential mechanism comprises a pair of bevel planetary pinions supported on shafts pivotally mounted in a housing on axes at right angles to the axis of the sun gears with which the pinions mesh. In the form shown in Fig. 1, spiral bevel wheels are employed, and in that shown in Fig. 5, straight-toothed wheels. In both forms, the spindles 16 of the planet wheels 17, 17a are pivoted on crossshafts 14 forming part of a carriage 42 transversely slidable in slots 23 in cross-members 5 connecting the two parts 2, 6 of the driving housing carrying the crown gear 3. Interposed between the planets 17, 17a and their pivoted supports 15, 15a are fibre washers 13. In the form shown in Fig. 1, if one driven road wheel slips the gearing locks and drives solid owing to internal friction between the spiral teeth, while in Fig. 5, the locking effect is attained by permitting the supports 15a to slide a little axially on the shafts 14. In a further form, not shown, the planet shafts 16 are pivoted directly to the driving housing 2, 6.
