[Class 7 (vi)] [See also Group XXXIII] In an epicyclic reduction gear for use between a radial aeroplane engine and the propeller shaft, each planet wheel has a second coaxial ring of teeth which gears with a second internally or externally toothed wheel for actuating the valve mechanism. A crank shaft 15, Fig. 3, has a sun wheel 4 engaging planet wheels 6 on a carrier 7 mounted on the propeller shaft 8, the wheels 6 also engaging an internally toothed ring 5 fixed to the engine casing. Other pinions 9 mounted on the same shafts as the planet wheels 6 engage an internally or externally toothed ring 1 having bevel teeth 13 for driving radial shafts 10 for actuating the valve gear. Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the planet pinions have two sets of teeth 11, 12 respectively engaging the fixed ring 5 and sun pinion 4. The teeth 11 also drive a ring 2 geared to the radial shafts 10, or drive a cam ring for actuating radial pushrods.
