Abstract
522,949. Screw propellers. TOMKINS, J. W. Dec. 20, 1938, No. 37012. [Class.114] The blades of a variable pitch propeller are adjustable by a double epicyclic bevel gear comprising a primary gear consisting of a sun wheel 4 fixed to the propeller shaft 5, a crown wheel 3 fixed to the engine casing or other stationary structure, and planet pinions 6 on spindles 7 of a planet carrier 8 free upon the shaft 5, and a secondary gear enclosing the primary gear and consisting of a sun wheel 11 free on the shaft 5, planet pinions 9 also mounted on the spindles 7, and a crown wheel 10 provided with means, e.g., teeth 14 and a manually operable pinion, whereby it may be turned to cause movement of the sun wheel 11 relatively to the shaft to effect the adjustment of the blades. For this purpose, the wheel 11 may be fast with a gear 29 meshing with pinions 16 on shafts 17 carrying worms 18 operating wormwheels 19 on the blade roots, or, as shown, a reduction gearing may be arranged between the wheel 11 and the gear 29. This gearing comprises a member 23 freely mounted on an eccentric boss 21 on the wheel 11 and having two externally toothed rims 22, 24 meshing respectively with an internally toothed ring 25 fixed to the propeller hub 28 and an internally toothed ring 26 fast with the gear 29, the rings 25, 26 being concentric with the shaft 5. By suitably choosing the numbers of teeth on the rims 22, 24 and rings 25, 26 a large reduction of the movement of the wheel 11 may be effected. The worm 19 is arranged between a shoulder 36 on the blade and a ring 37 forming the race of a ball bearing 38 on a sleeve 30 splined to the shaft 5. A roller bearing 33 is arranged between the propeller root and a hub 32 on the sleeve and a ball bearing 34 between the blade and the hub 28. Longitudinal thrust is taken by a roller bearing 35. Instead of a worm and wormwheel gearing for adjusting the blades, bevel gearing or spur gears on the blades engaging racks actuated by worms may be employed.
