556,825. Screw propellers. DAHLSTROM, G. O. A. May 22, 1942, No. 7032. Convention date Nov. 14, 1940. [Class 114] In a variable pitch propeller, the pitch is adjustable by hand and also automatically with variations in the propulsive force by the relative rotation, when moved axially, of two oppositely toothed helical gears 12, 17, which form the sun-wheels of an epicyclic train and mesh with planet-wheels 15, 18 mounted on a common axle. The gear 12 is fixed on the propeller-hub 5, which is splined on its shaft 6, so that it can slide axially against the pressure of a spring 9 under variations of the propulsive force. The gear 17 is carried by a sleeve 1, which is rotatable on the hub 5 and acts through bevel-gearing 4 to adjust the pitch of the blades. The planet-wheel 18 gears with a fixed toothed annulus 19, and the planet-wheel 15 with an annulus 16, which can be turned by means of a worm 25 and a motor controlled by the pilot. The axial movement of the gears 12, 17 with respect to the planet-wheels causes relative motion of the sleeve 1 and the hub 5. An indicator 35, having a piston 29 bearing against a part 32 of the hub, shows changes in the propulsive force. A second indicator, connected to the worm 25, shows the adjustment of the blades.
