Abstract

546,995. Screw propellers. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., GILLMORE, K. B., BROWN, G. H. F., and READ, P. H. Dec. 31, 1940. No. 18264. [Class 114] Pitch-change of an airscrew is effected by a motor which runs continuously in one direction, even if the airscrew engine is stopped, and is connected to the blades through reduction gearing and clutches which are selectively operable to transmit pitch-changing movement in either direction. An electric, hydraulic or other motor may be employed. In the mechanism shown in the Figure, a pitch-change motor 10, mounted on the front of the airscrew hub 11, drives a sun-wheel 13 co-operating with a planet-wheel 14 which is mounted in a cage 16 and co-operates with an annulus 15 fixed in the hub. A spindle 17 mounted in the cage carries a planetpinion 18 which drives epicyclic reduction-gearing 21, 22, 22<SP>1</SP> for rotating the blades 23. The spindle carries also planet-pinions 19, 20 of different diameters co-operating with sun-wheels 26, 30 on shafts 27, 29 carrying splined clutchplates 28, 31 which can be moved into engagement with brake-surfaces 34, 36 by means of an axiallymovable band 32. Complete braking of either clutch-plate locks the associated sun-wheel and causes the reduction-gearing to rotate the blades in one direction or the other for pitch-change. The band 32 may be operated by means of a piston 38 which is moved in one direction by pressure-fluid delivered to a space 37, and in the other direction by a spring 39 or by fluid-pressure. The fluidsystem may be controlled by a governor. Alternatively, the band 32 can be operated by handoperated mechanical means or a remote-control system. In a modification, all the mechanism, excepting the second stage 221 of the reductiongearing, is mounted on the aircraft-engine. The reduction-gearing may effect pitch-change at a higher speed in one direction than in the other. The Provisional Specification refers to Specification 470,284.
