Abstract

201,337. Hopkinson, R. H., and Hopkinson, V. June 10, 1922. Variable-speed gearing comprises a spur epicyclic train controlled through a worm epicyclic train by ratchet gearing variable by a movable eccentric. A cage G, Fig. 1, loose on driven shaft E carries the planet spindles J of the spur train and also the spindles N of the worms L. Planets F mesh with an internal gear A on driving flywheel B and also with central gear D secured to shaft E. Secured also to spindles J are gears H meshing with a double-raced gear G loose upon a sleeve G<1> of the cage G. Meshing with the other race K' of the gear K are the worms L connected by skew gears O, Fig. 2, to a second loose central gear P. A second race P<1> on the gear P meshes with planets R which are ratchet mounted on spindles S oscillated by arms U dragged round upon an eccentric T of adjustable displacement. The worms L may slide and be pressed by springs M. In a modification, the wheels P have an internal race acted upon by the oscillating ratchet means.
