Variable-speed gearing comprises clutches o', o<9> - - arranged coaxially with driving and driven shafts a, b and adapted to be thrust into engagement intermittently while rotating with cyclically varying speeds. A spider e fast upon the driving-shaft carries shafts d each having fast thereon a planet gear d<2> meshing with a sun gear o<3>, o<4>, or o<5>. The shaft d is caused to oscillate by a link connection f<3>, d<3> with the strap f<5> of an eccentric. The eccentric f<7> which is annular does not turn and is displaced eccentrically to vary the cycle of speeds of the sun gears o<3> &c. to which the clutch members o' &c. are secured. By means of a cam j<1> on the eccentric, through linkage d<1>, f', sleeve o, and gears o<1>, o<2>, a differential movement of cams o<6> is effected, which causes the periodic operation of the clutches. Instead of the sun and planet gear pairs, crank linkages may be used.
