Variable-speed gearing comprises an epicyclic train controlled automatically by a mass or masses, such as L, L<1>, which are reciprocated along substantially radial spiral guides I, I<1>, inertia and centrifugal force coming in. Stepped planet gears C, E mesh with sun gears B, F fast on driving and driven shafts A, G, respectively. The carrier frame H of the planets is loose, and balanced guides I, I<1> are rigidly fixed thereto. The planetary spindles D, D<1> are cranked, and are connected by rods J, J' to thrust blocks K, K<1>, which communicate reciprocation to the weights L, L<1>, which are threaded upon the guides so as to have spiral motion.
