Abstract

474,190. Automatic speed-changing gear. MAX, P. Jan. 14, 1937, No. 1116. [Class 80 (ii)] A mechanical transmitter with speed-changing automatic with load comprises aligned driving and driven shafts 1, 7, Fig. 1, with cranks 3, 9, one upon each. The crank 9 supports a planetary spidle 10 and a planet pinion 12, Fig. 2, which engages a rack 6 connected to the crank 3 by a short drag-link 4. The rack 6 is held against the pinion 12 by guides 13. The spindle 10 is connected to an oscillating inertia wheel, which in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is a simple fly-wheel 11 fast on that spindle. The linkage causes the fly-wheel to oscillate, and the resistance to oscillation produces a couple on the load shaft 7 which drives variably with the load. At each reversal of the interaction between the rack 6 and link 4, the link 4 swings right round producing lost motion between the crank 3 and the rack, and eliminating shocks. In a form shown in Fig. 5, the inertia wheel 15 is a spur wheel loose on the driven shaft 7 and geared to the spindle 10 through a pinion 14. The inertia of the oscillating wheel 15 is adapted to increase with the speed of the constantly rotating shaft 7. Flyweights 16 carried by the wheel 15 are held in their contracted positions by springs 18, Fig. 7, unless these springs 18 are expanded through a cone sleeve 17 by flyweights 20 carried by the shaft 7.
