Abstract

283,761. Hirst, T. E. C. Feb. 28, 1927. Variable-speed gearing acting by momentum varies automatically. A fly-wheel D turns loosely upon a pin Q, which is carried by a crank fast on the driving-shaft A, or, as shown, by a fly-wheel C with balancing weight C<1>. Upon the driven shaft B, preferablv in line with the shaft A, is secured a fly-wheel E with a crank-pin F. The pin F carries a slipper S sliding in a diametral groove X upon the fly-wheel D. The throws of the crank pins Q, F are different. The inertia of the fly-wheel D effects an elastic drive. The throws of the cranks may be adjusted by suitable means to change the speed range, and such gear units may be used in multiple around a common axis.
