Abstract

453,013. Variable-speed gearing. FONTANA, C., 13, Via Podgora, La Spazia, Genoa, Italy. July 16, 1935, No. 20285. Convention date, July 16, 1934. [Class 80 (ii)] An automatically - variable variable - speed transmission device suitable for a lift comprises a driving-shaft 2 carrying a crank 3, Figs. 1 and 2, which turns round inside a slot member 6, Fig. 3, which is carried round solid with the crank if the load is light enough, or is idly reciprocated if the load is too great to be lifted, or is both reciprocated idly and turned with the load at a speed proportioned to a substantial load. Between the crank 3 and the member 6 is a ball-bearing ring 4, Fig. 2. A casing 17 fast on a load shaft 18 is driven, and inside this on ball bearings 20 is a drum 19, Figs. 5 and 6, which carries rigidly a second crank-pin 34. The drum 19 has oppositelyextending fingers 24, 23 which form abutments for springs 15, 16, Fig. 2. The slot member 6 has a finger 13 which projects along with the finger 24 between the inturned ends 27, 28, Fig. 1, of the spring 15. The slot member 6, Fig. 4, has a longer finger 14 projecting the other way through an arcuate window 29, Fig. 6, in the drum 19 which together with the arm 23 comes between the inturned ends 25, 26, Fig. 1, of the spring 16. The slot member 6, Figs. 3 and 4, has two symmetrical pins 8 which project through windows 30, 31, Fig. 6, in the drum 19 and carry antifriction bowls 10, Fig. 2, which engage a slot 11, Fig. 7, in a second slotted member 12. The member 12 is, as shown in Fig. 8, rigid with a toothed sector 38 which engages an internally-toothed sector 44, Fig. 1, on a flange 43, Fig. 2, rigid with the driven casing 17. The boss 37 of the sector 38 has a circular opening 36 which rides on a ball bearing 35, on the crank 34. When the device is operative, the rotary motion of the driving crank 3 is resolved into an idle reciprocation of the slot member 6 along the other slot 11 and into a torque which tilts the member 6 so that the fingers 13, 14 separate from the fingers 24, 23, as shown in Fig. 18, so stressing the springs 15, 16 while at the same time the member 12 rocks relatively as the sector 38 rolls inside the sector 44 to a position of rest at the end of the rocking while transmitting to the sector 44 and drum 17 a torque varying with the extent of rocking of the sector 38 and the stressing of the springs.
