Abstract

484,273. Variable speed gearing. HEWITT, B. Sept. 20, 1937. No. 25412. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed transmission device operating automatically by centrifugal action comprises a ring D which encircles an eccentric B or crank-pin secured to a driving shaft A and which coacts with a ring E coupled to a driven drum H by means of springs or resilient material L. Friction between the ring D and the eccentric B is reduced by an antifriction bearing K. As the shaft A rotates, ring D is carried round, while rotating on its own axis, until its centrifugal force causes the ring E to take up an eccentric position and drive results, slipping taking place until a sufficiently high speed is attained. To obtain a balanced arrangement, the mechanism may be duplicated, the two eccentrics being at 180‹ to each other.
