Variable - speed gearing comprises rotating masses A which are accelerated and decelerated by any relative motion between driving and driven shafts E, C thereby resisting such relative motion and effecting an elastic drive which varies in ratio with the load on the driven shaft. The n,asses A are secured to levers B which project through trunnion blocks D and are articulated to the pin G of a crank carried by the shaft C. The blocks D are supported in apertures in the periphery of a drum F secured to the shaft E.
