[Class 37] [Also in Groups XXIV, XXX and XXXI] Bowden or like mechanism comprising two longitudinally movable flexible cables 3, 4, for positively transmitting movement from a part 2 to a shaft 7 in both directions includes a differential device 9, 10, 11, for taking up the slack in the cables. The side gears 9, 10, of the differential are free on the shaft 7 and secured respectively to drums 5, 6, to which the cables 3, 4, are attached, one cable passing over the top of one drum and the other cable underneath the other. The planet wheel 11 is secured to a spindle 12, which is mounted for rotation in a block 8 secured to the driven shaft 7, and is acted upon by a torsion spring 13 tending to rotate the planet 11 to tension the cables 3, 4. Reverse rotation of the planet 11 is prevented by a one-way ratchet 15, 14 (Fig. 3). For normal operation of the mechanism the differential device rotates solid with the shaft 7 on operation of the driving member 2, the pull by one cable being in the same direction as the push by the other. Should any slack develop in the cables the differential device comes into operation under the effect of the spring 13 to rotate the side bevels 9, 10, and their drums 5, 6, relatively to each other to take up this slack. This differential device may be provided at the driving end of the mechanism and the bevel 11 may be manually adjustable and retained by a spring catch. Applications of this mechanism are mentioned for the throttle controls of an aircraft or for a remote tuning control of a wireless receiver.
