Abstract

351,932. Controlling variable-speed gearing; cable and like winding- apparatus. TAYLOR, H. G., 230, Friern Road, East Dulwich, London. March 18, 1930, No. 8728. [Class 80 (ii).] A winding drum or bobbin 1 is driven by gearing 2 controlled by the tension of the cable 3 to maintain that tension constant. The cable is led past guide pulleys 4, 5 over a jockey pulley 9 on a lever 10 adapted to move against a spring 10<1> to vary the amount of slip between the reaction member 2a of the epicyclic driving-gear 2 and brake shoes 8. If due to winding the tension increases, pulley 9 moves down and lever 22 to the left easing the grip of the shoes 8 so that the drum 1 is driven slower. Adjustment can be effected by a nut 32 acting on spring 30. In a modified arrangement, the lever linkage between pulley 9 and lever 22 is replaced by a simple hydraulic thrust-transmitting device. A Bowden wire might be used.
