Abstract

Capstans ; winches; driving-gear ; laying or guiding ropes on or off during winding or unwinding; control-transmitting gear.-A shaft 13 driven by an electric motor 6 through gears 8, 7 drives the shaft 2 of a capstan 1 through bevel gears 9, 10, and the shaft 5 of a take-up drum 4 through chain gearing 11, 12. The drum 4 is connected to its shaft by a conical friction clutch 14, 15 which is operated by a pedal-actuated lever 17. A brake 23 carried by this lever is applied to a. flange on the drum 4 when the clutch is out. Traversing mechanism 24 driven by the shaft 5 lays the cable on the drum. The capstan has a cylindrical middle portion and frusto-conical ends.
