Abstract

137,346. Anderson, A. Nov. 18, 1918. Driving-gear for winding and paying-out apparatus; self-sustaining gear; laying or guiding ropes on during winding.-A winch for raising and lowering ships' boats and other objects comprises a drum 1 with an internally screwed boss 3 mounted on a threaded shaft 2, the end 14 of the drum being adapted to engage with a friction clutch member 5 forming part of a hand or power operated gear-wheel loosely mounted on the shaft 2. The rotation of the shaft is controlled by a capstan handle 15, and, by the relative rotary movement between the drum and shaft, the drum is moved along the shaft until it engages with the friction member 5. By this arrangement, the drum may be moved until the clutch members are in engagement, and the falls are then wound on the drum by the rotation of the wheel 5. The load may be lowered by disengaging the clutch members, the lowering operation being controlled by suitably moving the drum laterally along the shaft by slowing the rotation of the capstan handle 15. This causes the friction clutch members to engage, and the wheel 5 being stationary acts as a brake. To raise the falls quickly, the pin 23 is inserted into a slot 24 to lock the shaft and drum together. The drum may then be rotated rapidly by the capstan handle 15. To ensure that the ropes are wound equally and uniformly, the drum is grooved and the falls are passed through eyelets 16 to which a traversing movement is imparted by means of a rotary screwed shaft 18. A second traversing-member presses the coils together on the drum. The driving-shaft 12 is prevented from running back by ratchet gear.
