Abstract

115,054. Macfarlane, G. T. Jan. 22, 1917. Driving-gear for winding and paying-out apparatus; brakes.-The barrel of a winch when rotating in a lowering direction under gravity is prevented from acquiring too high a speed by engaging the driving shaft upon the rate of rotation attaining the desired limit, the engine thereupon acting as a brake. The barrel a is driven in a hoisting direction through epicyclic gearing as described in Specification 17680/15, and the end remote from the epicyclic gear drums is formed in one with or fixed to another brake drum m carrying pivoted pawls o adapted to engage a ratchet wheel p fixed to the driving shaft b. During hoisting the barrel a and shaft b rotate in opposite directions and the pawls o engage the ratchet wheel p as soon as the rate of rotation of the barrel a becomes the same as that of the shaft b. If the winch is electrically driven, the connexion of the barrel a to the shaft b may cause the motor to generate electricity. Annular faces 7 on the drums d, g may be brought into engagement for overhauling by sliding the drum g towards the drum d by the means described in Specification 17680/15.
