Abstract

1,269,778. Winches. VICKERS Ltd., and WELIN DAVIT & ENG. CO. Ltd. 16 Dec., 1969 [2 Oct., 1968], No. 46857/68. Heading B8B. Apparatus for hoisting a floating body from a rough sea comprises a pilot cable 20 extending between secondary and auxiliary winch drums 22, 19, and a main cable 4 extending between a main winch drum 7 and a fixture, the main and secondary drums 7, 22 being mounted for rotation together whereby when the pilot cable hook 18 is attached to the body, a stallable high speed low torque hydraulic motor 9 driving the drums 7, 22 maintaining the cable 20 taut and applies a similar motion to the cable 4 by acting as a motor and a pump as the cable 20 tensions and slackens with wave motion. The main cable hook 5 is lowered for attachment to the floating body by the auxiliary winch 19 winching the cable 20 up and therefore unwinching cables 20 and 4 from the drums 22 and 7. A low speed high torque hydraulic motor 8 is coupled to the drums 7, 22 through a disengageable free wheel device 10 which is engaged when the body is to be lifted from the sea, the device 10 permitting the motor 9 to override the motor 8 to take up any slack which develops in the cables 4, 20. The drums 7, 22 may be driven in unison by separate motors geared together. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the main back is laterally stabilized by the pilot cable passing over a sheave thereon. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown) the auxiliary drum is driven from the main motor shaft through a clutch which is interlocked such that it is disengaged when the free wheel is engaged.
