Abstract

1,269,777. Winches. VICKERS Ltd. 17 Sept., 1969 [18 Sept., 1968], No. 44386/68. Heading B8B. Apparatus for hoisting a boat 29 out of the sea, which boat is subject to move matrix, comprises a cable 24 supporting the boat intermediate the ends of the cable which extends between a low speed high torque winch 26 and a high speech low torque hydraulic winch 18, 19 which maintains the cable taut as the boat moves on the waves, the winch 26 being operated to lift the boat from the sea once a one way device 20 is brought into operation whereby the winch 18, 19 is prevented from paying out cable and merely takes up slack therein. The device 20 is prevented from free wheeling in both directions by a brake 23 during lifting of the boat. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) the boat is supported on one end of the cable, the other end of which is attached to a winch drum driven by a low torque high speed hydraulic motor and by a high torque low speed motor through a disengageable one way device, the low torque motor maintaining the cable taut at all times. The high torque motor operates when the one way device is engaged, to hoist the boat, whereby the drum is restricted to move in the wind in direction only.
