Abstract
1431759 Hoisting VICKERS Ltd 12 July 1973 [22 June 1972] 29372/72 Heading B8B In apparatus for hoisting loads from the moving decks of ships, the tension in the hoisting cable is maintained constant prior to hoisting from the deck, and the velocity of the deck supported cargo is sensed to determine the optimum time to hoist from the deck. In a first embodiment, a hoisting rope 8 is wound on a drum 1 rotated by a motor 2 to tension the rope, the motor 2 allowing the drum to oscillate as the deck moves so as to maintain the tension in the rope. Further motors 4 are connected to the drum via free wheels 5 to rotate the drum to hoist the load from the deck. A sensor 16 detects the rotational speed of the drum to determine when the motors 4 should be energized. In a second embodiment one end of a hoisting rope is wound on a drum 51 driven by a motor 2, whilst the other end of the rope is wound on a drum 58 driven by a motor 4. The motor 2 tensions the rope, and a brake 53, 54 is connected to the drum 51 via a free-wheel 52 so as to stop the drum in response to the sensor 16. The sensor also energizes the motor 4. Various forms of sensor are described.
