Abstract

1417010 Winches GARRETT CORP 6 Dec 1972 [8 Dec 1971] 56244/72 Heading B8B A winding apparatus for a hi-line system between vessels subject to random wave motion comprises drums 56, 58 for the cables 26, 28 of the system, interconnected by a differential gear 68, and a drum 54 for a tension compensating cable 38 and coupled to the planet carrier 70 of the differential gear 68, the latter permitting random movement between the vessels to be superimposed on the motion of the drums 56, 56 causing traversing of the hi-line trolley. With the load trolley of the system staioned at the supply ship, cable 26 and drum 56 are held stationary by pinions of stationary drive motors 90, 92, which are mounted on a plate 82 braked by an electric brake 112, the random movement causing the line 28 with drum 58 to pay out and wind in and causing the drum 54 to similarly move via the differential planet 70 carried on a shaft 78 coupled to the drum 54. The cable 36 wound on the drum 54 extends to a tensioning device, to maintain a constant tension on the winding apparatus to maintain the cable 28 tensioned during the random movements. To traverse the trolley between the vessels, the motors 90, 92 are started and drive the drum 50 since the motor mounting plate 82 is still braked, the drum 58 being simultaneously counter rotated through the gear 68, and any variation in tension in the system being absorbed by superimposed rotation of the drum 58. As the trolley approaches the receiving vessel, the brake 112 and motors are de-energized to free the motor plate 82 and a clutch 98 is energized to lock the drum 54 to the plate 82 whereby random movements of the vessels payout and wind in both drums 56 and 58, the tension still being applied by the drum 54.
