Abstract

1367078 Winches WHARTON ENGS (ELSTREE) Ltd 11 Nov 1971 [11 Aug 1970] 38700/70 Heading B8B A hauling apparatus mounted on a trailer 1 comprises twin haulage drums 4, 5 and a storage drum 7 for a cable 6, the haulage drums being driven through a reduction gear train having a power input shaft at right angles to the drum axes, and the majority of gears in the train being mounted on shafts lying in the plane of the drum axes. The storage drum 7 is driven from the haulage drum at a speed greater than that of the haulage drum, an adjustable slipping friction coupling in this drive facilitating like speeds of the storage and haulage drums, but with a tension maintained in the cable extending there between. A ratchet arrangement in the drive to the storage drum 7 prevents the storage drum drive from rotating in the paying out direction and during cable payout therefore, the storage drum is rotated against the friction coupling and tension is maintained in the cable between the haulage and storage drums. A cable spooling device 60 is associated with the storage drum.
