Abstract

1492744 Winches WHARTON ENGS (ELSTREE) Ltd 7 Nov 1974 [8 Nov 1973 2 Jan 1974] 52000/73 and 00110/74 Heading B8B A winch arrangement for hauling cable 4 initially, followed by chain attached thereto, comprises a driven grooved hauling wheel 2 of relatively large diameter over which the cable and chain are hauled, driven twin multi-grooved haulage drums 1 of relatively small diameter around which the cable 4 passes prior to spooling on to a storage drum, and a collection locker below the hauling wheel 2, into which the hauled chain is deposited. The drive for the haulage drums including a chain of gears, the majority of which are mounted on shafts lying in or adjacent a plane passing substantially through the axes of the haulage drums. The hauling wheel 2 has its axle inclined to the horizontal to prevent interference between the chain arriving at and leaving the wheel, and is mounted on plates 5 which guide the chain. A switch is provided to be actuated by the first portion of chain to leave the hauling wheel 2 during hauling, to de-energize the drive for the hauling drums 1 whereby the chain is deposited directly into the locker 6 with continued rotation of the hauling wheel 2.
