Abstract

1,224,647. Winch drums. DOXFORD & SUNDERLAND Ltd. 16 May, 1969, No . 26817/68 Heading B8M. A winch drum 10 is provided with a storage section 14 and a working section 16, the storage section being of smaller diameter than the working section, and a tapered section 15 is provided between the two sections to allow rope, cable or chain to climb from the storage section to the working section as the drum rotates. The working section 16 is preferably provided with helical or parallel grooves 17. In the case of parallel grooves, the grooves are interrupted, circumferentially, by a plain portion of drum surface and a rope deflector is provided to deflect rope from one groove to the next over the plain portion. The drum is used in combination with two guides 18, 19 for alternatively guilding rope on to the storage and working sections.
