Abstract

882,084. Towing winches. ATLAS-WERKE A.G. Feb. 26, 1958 [May 13, 1957], No. 6303/58. Class 78 (5). An epicyclic gear is introduced into the drive of a towing winch in order to control the paying-out of the winch cable to avoid excess tension in said cable. Thus, the motor (not shown) drives the winch drum (not shown) via epicyclic gearing 6, 8, 9, 10, of which planet gears 8 and 9 are fixed on shaft 7, carried by rotatable drum 12 which forms the planet carrier. The couple exerted by the cable tension upon drum 12 acts upon weighbeam 20 pivoted at 11, the couple being transmitted thereto by gearing 13, 14 and being braked by said gear 14 driving oil brake 16 through shaft 15 journalled in the weigh-beam 20. The couple, acting around shaft 11, displaces the weigh-beam against spring 21 and the displacement is transmitted to control drum 22 through lever 23 and rack 25, adjustment being made by hand wheel 28. Control drum 22 controls the motor so that cable is payed-out and hauled in, the motor performing a cycle of operations dependent on the factor 1-n<SP>2</SP>, where n represents the gearing efficiency of the winch drive.
