692,519. Toothed gearing. STOECKICHT, W. G. Feb. 16, 1951 [March 6, 1950], No. 3848/51. Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] In an epicyclic gear having a driving carrier 2 and a driven sun 6 the planets engage a floating reaction annulus 7 which may be braked for drive by a large number of friction shoes 13. The shoes are operated by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders 11 which are interconnected so that braking pressure is applied uniformly and does not affect the positioning of the annulus. Rings 9 prevent axial displacemeiit of the annulus and the brake shoes are pressed outwards by two springs 14. The method of braking is also shown applied to an epicyclic change-speed gear where a driving carrier has two axially-spaced sets of planets engaging two floating annuli, and two sun gears yielding different velocity ratios are secured to the driven shaft, the speed of the latter being varied by selective braking of the annuli. It is stated that the brake shoes may be actuated by springs instead of fluid pressure.
