Abstract

673,072. Reversing gearing. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. March 8, 1950 [March 8, 1949] , No. 6345/49. Class 80 (ii). A driving shaft 11 is adapted to drive a driven shaft 12 at the same reduced speed in either direction by means of twin sun gears 25, 26 engaging alternately with circumferentially spaced. planet pinions 29 on a freely rotatable carrier 27 which pinions are connected with a series of other planets 30 engaging an annulus 31 on the driven shaft 12. The planets 29 also engage with annular rings of teeth 17, 18 on a member 16. Either the member 16 or the carrier 27 is adapted to be braked and then held stationary by brake shoes and dog clutches 21, 20a and 35, 34a respectively to provide forward or reverse driving of the shaft 12. By providing the planet pinions 29 of a diameter three times that of the pinions 30 the same reduction ratio is obtained in both directions.
