Abstract

An automatic speed change is achieved by interposing an epicyclic gear train (1, 3, 5, 6) between the V belt input drive (2) and the output pump drive shaft (8). The speed change occurs when weights (23) push a spring (27) loaded arm over the top dead centre position of the spring, due to centrifugal force. This action suddenly releases the pressure of brake pads (32) on the planet wheel (6) whic is then free to rotate. Rotation of the planet wheel causes brake shoes (34) to expand against the drum (19) and the output shaft then rotates at the same speed as the input pulley. Prior to the action, the epicyclic gear causes the output shaft to rotate at twice the speed of the input pulley.
