Abstract

977,531. Variable - speed epicyclic gear. A. C. WICKMAN. April 24, 1961 [May 3, 1960], No. 15500/60. Heading F2D. In a three-element epicyclic over/under drive gear the sun pinion 2 is engageable by axially-movable brake and clutch elements 10, 11, respectively, operated by one or more springs 17, located between the elements, and an overriding hydraulic actuator 24 for controlling the engagement and release of the second clutch element 16 carrying the annulus 6. In the overdrive unit shown spring 17 normally holds clutch elements 11, 16 in engagement to lock the gear for direct drive, but upon operation of piston 24 a lever 20 bearing against a fulcrum 21 on brake element 10 first disengages the clutch elements 11, 16 to release annulus 6, and then engages the brake elements 12, 13 to hold sun-wheel 2 fixed, so that the output shaft 8 is driven through the gear at increased speed. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the hydraulic actuator consists of differential pistons, the larger of which acts directly on brake element 10 and the smaller on clutch element 11. Underdrive arrangements with shafts 4, 8 reversed, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), are also described.
