Abstract

816,560. Change-speed gearing. REIS, S. Nov. 13, 1957 [Nov. 14, 1956; Dec. 24, 1956; Jan. 4, 1957], No. 35453/57. Class 80 (2). The planet carrier of an epicyclic gear is moved axially against resilient means, by torque loading on the helical teeth of the gears, to change the gear. An input shaft 1 has a sungear 2, and an output shaft 3 has a sun-gear 4 rigid therewith. The two sun-gears mesh with stepped planets 9, 10 carried by a planet carrier 5 having axial freedom on the shafts 1 and 2. A spring 15 urges the planet carrier towards the shaft 1 so that a cone-shaped member 11 contacts a clutch drum 12 rigid with the shaft 1 to provide a direct drive. An increase in torque passing through the gears 2, 9, 10, 4 which have helical teeth causes the planet carrier to move axially against the spring 15 and member 11 to contact a brake ring 13 and arrest the carrier to provide a ratio drive through the gear. A snap-action for the planet carrier is provided by a spring-ball detent 17 and grooves 19 in the shaft 3. In a modification the planet carrier is connected to the gear casing by a one-way clutch to prevent reverse rotation during the change interval and the spring 15 acts through a lever external to the casing. The lever may be connected to a piston subject to engine intake depression so that the spring pressure is proportional to engine torque. The lever may also be manually operated. An embodiment shows two of the gears connected in series to provide four speeds.
