Abstract

875,194. Change-speed gear. STARTRITE ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Nov. 10, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958], No. 38827/58. Class 80(2). A two-speed epicyclic gear for a drilling machine comprises planets 15 carried by an output shaft 11 which planets mesh an input sun-gear 8 and an axially slidable freely-rotatable ring gear 18 which may be held at 20 for reduced drive or clutched to the planet carrier at 19 for direct drive. The ring gear 18 is formed on the inner race of a ball-bearing 17, the outer race 16 of which is connected to an operating sleeve 26 by a pin 25 which engages a cam slot 23 in the housing 3. Rotation of the sleeve 26 by a manual lever 27 moves the pin 25 in the cam slot 23 which rotates and moves axially the outer race 16, which axial movement moves the inner race and gear 18 into engagement with the brake teeth 20 or clutch teeth 19. The sleeve 26 is rotationally positioned by a ball detent 28.
