Abstract

1,216,057. Change-speed gear; friction clutches. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 25 Sept., 1969 [4 Nov., 1968], No. 47219/69. Headings F2C and F2D. In a motor vehicle three-element epicyclic overdrive gear unit comprising intermeshing planets 30, 28 rotatably mounted on a carrier 32 fast with an output shaft 34 and respectively meshing a ring-gear 26, fast on an input shaft 10, and a sun 24 formed on a freelymounted axially movable clutch-brake member 44, in which the clutch-brake member 44 is biased by a spring 72 to clutch the sun 24 via a cone clutch 38 to the ring gear 26 for direct lock-up drive, normal torque delivery in direct drive being transmitted through a oneway clutch 36 arranged between the input ring 26 and output planet carrier 32, and oppositely moved by a selectively controlled fluid pressureoperated annular piston 56 to disengage the cone clutch 38 and brake the sun 24 via a multidisc brake 50, 52 to a fixed casing 14, 16 for overdrive at the planetary ratio, the one-way clutch overrunning, cone clutch 38 engagement during vehicle overrun or reverse in direct drive ratio is variably augmented by the torque responsive thrust of helical teeth of the gearing. During direct lock-up forward drive, the clutchbrake member 44 is loaded by the spring 72 to engage its clutch cone surface 42 with the ring gear 26 to lock the sun 24 thereto but plays no part in the forward torque transmission which is directly through the one-way clutch 36, however, during reverse torque, e.g. overrun or reverse drive, when the one-way clutch 21 becomes ineffective, the cone clutch 38 takes the drive and in addition to the spring thrust 72 the cone clutch engagement is increased by the variable load of the torque responsive helical gear thrust which now acts in the opposite direction to that for normal drive. In Figs. 2-A, 2-B (not shown), the cone clutch 38 additionally includes intermediate cone friction plates (74, 76) enabling a smaller helix angle to be used in the gearing.
