Abstract
1,033,469. Epicyclic gearing. VETA MASKINFABRIC V/C. W. KARLSSON. Sept. 18, 1964 [Sept. 24, 1963], No. 38148/64. Heading F2D. A two-speed epicyclic gear consists of stepped planets 9, 10 meshing input and output sun pinions 8, 11, the former of which is carried by a shaft 7 secured to a drum-shaped driving pulley 6, the planets being mounted in a cylindrical casing 1 carrying a series of radial friction shoes 4 urged outwardly towards the pulley by springs 5, a reduced drive through the gear being obtained by applying a brake band 2 to prevent contact between the shoes 4 and pulley 6. Release of the band 2 permits the shoes to move into engagement with the pulley under the combined effect of the springs 5 and centrifugal force, and thereby lock the gear solid for direct drive. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the brake and loading springs are arranged to operate axially.
