Abstract

727,894. Change-speed gearing: controlling clutches. SOMMER, A. H. and WICKHAM & CO., Ltd., D. Sept. 9, 1952 [July 13, 1951], No. 16724/51. Class 80 (2). In a planetary change-speed gear comprising at least two trains in series between driving and driven shafts 2, 27, the planet carrier 23 of the first train is connected to the annulus 22 of the second train and a fluid pressure operated multidisc clutch 8 can lock the sun gear 1 and annulus 4 of the first train together, a fluid pressure operated multi-disk clutch 31 being engaged to lock the annulus 30 of the second train to its planet carrier 26. The clutch 8 is actuated on axial movement of a presser plate 12, abutted by a thrust-bearing 14, when compressed air is admitted through a pipe 20 to a cylindrical portion 17 in an engine clutch housing 18 containing an annular piston 16. The annulus 4 of the first train and the sun gear 25 of the second train can be held fast by fluid pressure operated brake bands 21, 32 respectively. As shown the gear gives four ratios, but as a modification an extra train can be introduced so that eight ratios are obtained.
