Abstract

638,939. Epicyclic change - speed gearing. CLERK, R. C. Jan. 2, 1948, No. 205. [Class 80 (ii)] A three-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a driving shaft 14 keyed to a sleeve 20 integral with an annulus 1A of the first train, the planet carrier 1C of which is fixed to the driven shaft 17. A sun 1S is integral with an annulus 2A of the second train the carrier 2C of which is also secured to the driven shaft 17. The suns 1S, 2S have armatures 25, 28 engaging electro-magnetic brakes U, O for underdrive and overdrive ratios respectively, while an electromagnetic clutch D locks the second train to effect direct drive. The addition of a third train having an annulus 3A coupled with the driven shaft 17, a sun 3S integral with the sun 1S and a brakeable carrier 3C provides a fourth gear (low). The addition of a fourth train having a sun 4S integral with the driving sleeve 20, a planet carrier 4C coupled with the driven shaft 17 and a brakeable annullus 4A yields a fifth gear (emergency low). A reverse gear is provided by a fifth gear train comprising a sun 5S integral with the sun 4S, an annulus 5A coupled with the driven shaft 17 and a brakeable carrier 5C. The brakes of the third, fourth and fifth trains are of the torqueassisted type such as that described in Specificaaion 625,277. The gear box includes an impellor 54 to force lubricant from a sump 52 through axial and radial bores 60-63 in the shafts. Specification 625,318 is referred to.
